Thursday, June 30, 2022

Parking & Transportation has been recognized as Program of the Year by the Southwest Parking & Transportation Association Board of Directors for the fourth time since 2018.  Employees of the Parking & Transportation department, along with program partner associate professor Dr. Sharareh Kermanshachi, accepted the Excellence Award at the April Texas Parking & Transportation Association conference in San Antonio on behalf of the fourteen full-time employees and 40 student staff employed in the department.

The award recognizes the improvements in service and amenities offered to the UTA community as best-in-class, which translates to improvements, efficiencies, and high service levels for the UTA community.

The department was selected for its role in implementing free self-driving shuttles for students as part of the RAPID partnership between the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), City of Arlington, Via, May Mobility, and UTA Civil Engineering.

Other department initiatives recognized for past awards include:

  • The West Campus Garage construction project which was completed in 18 months
  • Reviving the Transportation Network through improved vehicles, technology, and service levels
  • Balancing robust enforcement strategies with managing event and visitor parking needs

In addition to these regional awards, the department has received national recognition in the March 2019 issue of the International Parking & Mobility Institute's The Parking Professional for reviving the transportation system, and the August 2019 issue of Parking Today (page 32) for use of Drones to understand parking dynamics.

Further, as a result of the department's consistent work providing innovative services for the UTA community, UT Arlington was named the host site for the 2025 College Parking & Transportation Association's annual conference.
